V roce 1949 Ludovico Mares navrhl a vyrobil první potápěčské masky a také harpuny. Tehdy měl před sebou jediný cíl: rozdělit se o svoji vášeň pro moře a potápění se zbytkem světa. Zpočátku nebyla firma Mares ničím víc, nežli malou dílnou v italském městě Rapallo.
